Girl power meets Smile Power! The four-time WNBA champion Seattle Storm inspires young girls to be their best both on the court, and off. The team’s StormAcademy celebrates girls and women in the Puget Sound region through dynamic leadership programs that inspire, speaking engagements that motivate and academic platforms that educate. These girl-focused leadership and career sessions allow girls to build community, explore STEM careers and learn new skills.
We are partnering with the StormAcademy by adding our Dental Pathways Program curriculum. Through this on-going partnership, we are introducing dozens of young participants to career opportunities in the dental profession. Held at the Seattle Storm’s Championship Center, the program focuses the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the dental professions. The content centers on why representation matters when choosing educational paths to these future careers.
Topics include personal oral health education, the many careers available in dentistry, and a hands-on dental instrument tutorial. Guest speakers include Delta Dental’s program manager for dental workforce diversity and inclusion Lolinda Turner and Arcora Foundation CEO Vanetta Abdellatif. The interactive stations, staffed by an all-Black female team of dental students and industry volunteers, help the girls walk away feeling informed, inspired, and empowered.
The day concludes with Q&A sessions with women leaders, like Seattle Storm owner Dawn Trudeau, who discussed leadership and career exploration.
